THE SHUFFLIN’ SHOES – A BRIEF HISTORY
The Shufflin’ Shoes became a team in the summer of 1990, after Dee Dick started teaching clogging classes at Vines Recreation Center in Plano. Shortly after the first class had finished their first lessons, they were invited to dance at the annual Balloon Fest and Leisure Days at Collin Creek Mall, both events sponsored by Plano Parks & Recreation Department. Boasting 5 experienced dancers and 5 rookies, we were very well received – and a new team was born!
The following year, more exhibitions followed and the team grew. We danced at our first Texas Cloggers’ Rally in 1991 with 20 cloggers; we had a huge laugh when Ron Hodge, who was emceeing, admitted he had never heard of The Shufflin’ Shoes! Since then, we have gained members and weight; lost members , weight and jobs; acquired spouses, sons- and daughters-in-law, more children and advanced degrees; become grandparents and Eagle Scouts; survived injuries/surgeries and moving to new homes; and enjoyed becoming friends as well as teammates.
We’ve danced in sunshine and rain, hot (102 º) and cold (25º); in libraries and malls, barns and beautiful auditoriums, honky-tonks and warehouses, on stages under tents and outside on rough concrete with no shade; with ballet dancers and barbershoppers, hot-air balloons and long-winded journalists, to Rodeo and Rap, classical and country - and even the Macarena! Through it all, one thing remains constant – the love and friendship of our favorite folks, our clogging family!
